The basics
SpineMED® spinal decompression is an advanced, non-surgical therapy designed to gently relieve pressure on the discs and nerves of the spine. It works by precisely targeting specific vertebral segments, creating a negative pressure within the disc space that helps draw bulging or herniated disc material back into place and promotes the flow of oxygen, water, and essential nutrients for natural healing.
The difference
Unlike older traction-based systems, SpineMED® Spinal Decompression uses a computer-controlled, fully automated platform that isolates and decompresses the exact spinal level needing treatment, without engaging surrounding muscles or causing discomfort. Know the difference
Both involve the soft, shock-absorbing disc that sits between two vertebrae, and both can press on a nerve root and send pain down an arm or a leg. The difference is whether the outer wall of the disc is still intact.
Still contained
The disc flattens and spreads outward past its normal edge, a bit like a tyre that is low on air, but the tough outer wall stays intact and nothing leaks out. The bulge usually involves a wide section of the disc and comes on gradually with age and wear.
Wall torn
The outer wall cracks and some of the soft inner material pushes through, the way jam escapes a doughnut that has been squeezed. It is usually a smaller, more concentrated spot, and the escaped material can irritate the nerve chemically as well as by pressing on it.
SpineMED® Spinal Decompression is used for both. By creating negative pressure inside the disc space, it aims to draw the displaced material back toward the centre and let oxygen, water and nutrients return to the disc. Which one you have, and whether decompression is appropriate for it, depends on your imaging and your examination.
